Guilty

Lauren K. Alleyne

as charged we tried
to reflect on the higher things in life:
God, the soul, goodness, grace and such,
learned to despise all things earthly, born
of flesh and appetite.

We learned silence,
how not to name wanting and desire,
how to ignore our bodies, its language
cursed – mother of error.

We learned secrets
instead, whispered to the dark
our transgressions and supposed sorrow:
Bless me Father for I have sinned.

We learned swearwords
pussytittiesfuckdickprickass
in tight huddles, our nervous giggles
grew with us into loud bellows we hurled
like poison-tipped arrows, like stones.

We learned shame
for our weakness, for succumbing
to the Eves we found within us: once
bitten, always longing – always despised.
