Grief

Ashley Sovern

In May 2001, I discovered that my much-wanted first child had died in utero at almost six months' gestation. I delivered her a few days later in the company of my partner, my best friend, and some very caring hospital staff. I was not able to write much about the experience, but wanted to find some way to express and symbolize my grief. Months later, I made this collage, and found the process to be therapeutic and healing. The drawing in the center is from a book called "The Spirit of Children: The Art and Life of Karen Carrino."

Ashley Sovern has a long history of involvement in issues related to women's sexuality. A former rape crisis counselor and sex educator, she is a counseling psychology doctoral candidate who recently completed five years as director of counseling at a non-profit women's reproductive health clinic in Minneapolis. Her teaching and research interests include: life transitions, crisis intervention, ethics, personal values, grief and loss, and healthy sexuality.
